BTS, 아시아 첫 ‘AMA 대상’…그래미도 녹일까?: 전문가 대담
BTS has set another record.
The South Korean boyband took home three awards at the 2021 American Music Awards, the “Artist of the Year,” considered to be the top award “favorite pop duo or group” and “favorite pop song.”
What does all this means for BTS and K-pop?
For more, we have our regular culture critic Youngdae Kim in the studio… AND Bernie Cho, President of D-F-S-B Kollective, joining us live on Zoom.
Thank you both for joining us.
Let’s start with you, Youngdae.
How big of a deal is the American Music Awards? And what is the success behind BTS winning the Artist of the Year?
They were the first Asian act to win the award.
And I want to ask you, Bernie. As someone in the K-pop industry, what does BTS’ win mean for the K-pop genre… and the global pop music industry as a whole?
Bernie, BTS has a passionate fan base, known as the “BTS Army”… which has greatly contributed to the fan vote.
What’s driving fans to go crazy about BTS? What makes them so special?
Youngdae, BTS also took home two more big awards – “Favorite Pop Duo or Group” and “Favorite Pop Song” for “Butter.”
It’s an all-English song.
Would you say there is a fine line now between K-pop and pop?
And Bernie, who else won in the other categories? And what are some of the major takeaways from the awards?
Youngdae, We are now waiting for the 64th Grammy nominees announcement… it’s due in the coming hours.
BTS was not so lucky with the Grammys last year.
But what about this year? Some say the Grammys are more conservative toward non-Western acts and songs.
And to you Bernie, do you think K-pop is going mainstream in the American pop industry… or on the global stage? OR is it just for BTS?
And, who do you think will be successors to BTS in South Korea?
That was culture critic Youngdae KIM… and Bernie Cho, President of DFSB Kollective.
Thank you for your insights.
